The head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, could become the interim president of the European Council if the current leader, Charles Michel, leaves his post if elected to the European Parliament in the summer. Politico reported it.
It noted that this is a scenario – in which Orban leads the EU Council for six months immediately after the 2024 European Parliament elections – that most of the 26 EU leaders are desperate to avoid, given the rise in tensions with between them and Orban, for example on the issue of support for Ukraine from the EU.
According to the publication, after the European Parliament elections, which will be held on June 6-9 in all 27 EU countries, European leaders will meet on June 17, and then again on June 27-28. In these meetings they will probably try to reach an agreement on Michel’s replacement.
According to the plan, Michel will remain in his position until the end of November.
Orban vetoed a “mega package” that included aid to Ukraine, spending on migration programs, funding for the EU Solidarity Fund and defense. This document will be returned for consideration at the beginning of 2024.
