Before the large-scale attack that took place on December 12, attackers could steal subscriber data. The hack caused catastrophic destruction and was intended to cause psychological damage and gather intelligence. Thousands of virtual servers and PCs were destroyed. This is the first time a cyber attack has completely destroyed the core of a telecom operator. Ilya Vityuk, head of the SBU cybersecurity department, said this in an interview with Reuters.
This attack is a big message, a big warning not only for Ukraine, but also for the entire Western world, so that they understand that no one is protected,” he said.
According to a representative of the intelligence service, the Russians could have access to the system from spring to November last year. Hackers could steal personal information, locate phones, intercept SMS messages, and possibly steal Telegram accounts with the level of access they were given.
Let us remind you that Kyivstar stated that during the cyber attack, hackers destroyed 40% of the mobile operator’s infrastructure. The hacker attack was quite unique; about a thousand people were involved in the recovery operation. Attackers compromised Kyivstar’s cyber defenses due to the compromised account of one of its employees.
