Federal law enforcement officials have been wary of the potential for online rhetoric to escalate into actual violence since the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol that left dozens dead.
The FBI and Colorado law enforcement officials are investigating threats against state Supreme Court justices who last week voted to remove Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 presidential election. It was reported by CNN on Monday, December 25, citing a statement from an FBI public affairs officer.
“The FBI is aware of the situation and is cooperating with local law enforcement. We will vigorously investigate any threats or use of violence by those who use extremist views to justify their actions, regardless of their motivation,” the FBI said. .
CNN said that “state and local law enforcement officials and non-governmental research groups are monitoring the rhetoric in extremist online forums for signs that it may turn into credible threats to government official.”
The names of the four Colorado Supreme Court justices who decided to disqualify Trump from the election often appear in “flaming” messages on such forums calling for the judges’ personal information to be made public.
In particular, a user of a far-right website supporting Trump wrote about it: “All rats wearing clothes should be hanged.”
Other messages contained indirect calls for civil war, as well as other violent language.
