The Orthodox Church of Ukraine holds a Christmas service at St. Sophia Cathedral, led by Metropolitan Epiphanius.
In addition, at 12 o’clock the Christmas Holy Mass of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine will take place in the Church of St. Alexander.
We remind you that this year in Ukraine, for the first time, Christmas is officially celebrated on December 25th. On September 1, at the start of the New Year, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church switched to the New Julian calendar. Today most church dates are celebrated 13 days earlier. The New Julian calendar is used by most Orthodox churches, including the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
The OCU stressed that the transition of churches to the new calendar is voluntary, and the fact that some parishes and monasteries remain in the old style should not be a cause of controversy. Therefore, some Ukrainians will still celebrate Christmas according to the Julian calendar on January 7th. This calendar is followed by the Russian, Serbian, Georgian and Jerusalem Orthodox churches.
We remind you that Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kiev and All Ukraine led a holy service in the Cathedral of the Golden-Domed Cathedral of St. Michael in Kyiv on the Sunday before Christmas.
In the report, the National Police tightened security measures for Christmas.
