Previously, international observers considered these elections dishonest, writes Reuters.
The protest leaders were reportedly representatives of the pro-European Serbia Against Violence (SPN) coalition. Protesters took to the streets with flags of Serbia and the European Union.
Later, protesters tried to storm the town hall, where the local election commission is located; the police responded by using pepper spray and barricading themselves in the building.
As a result of the protests, 38 people were detained and more than 30 police were injured, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said. In addition, she stated that Russian intelligence services provided information about possible incidents at the protest in Belgrade. She also claims that she shared information with “several foreign ambassadors,” but they accused us of spreading disinformation, lies, that we trust the Russian service and that this is nonsense.”
In addition, the country’s President Aleksandar Vucic thanked “foreign intelligence services” for warning about pogroms being prepared in the country.
Protests against the election results are taking place in the Serbian capital Belgrade for the seventh day. After the results of the early parliamentary and municipal elections were announced, the opposition accused the authorities of stealing votes and said that the victory of the ruling coalition in the Belgrade city assembly was “out of the question.”
The day before, protesters broke the glass of the entrance door to the Belgrade administration building, demanding the cancellation of the parliamentary election results.
Supporters of the opposition movement “Serbia Against Violence” cordoned off the building of the Belgrade City Assembly during a protest against the results of voting in the parliamentary elections, which were won by the Aleksandar Vucic-Serbia Must Not Stop coalition. Some of the protesters broke the door of the building and tried to break inside, N1 reports.
The Republican Election Commission is located in the city administration. According to the publication, after the demonstrators broke the glass of the front door, the police used pepper spray and blocked the entrance to the administration.
Several people were detained. According to the Kurir portal, demonstrators also threw burning fireworks at the building.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will soon address the nation on the occasion.
Earlier, protesters blocked the center of Belgrade. This is already the seventh day of rallies after the parliamentary elections held in the country last Sunday.
