The Kremlin is actively trying to use the new regiments to strengthen Russia’s control over the occupied rear areas.
The Russian command has completed the transfer of three newly formed regiments as part of the 116th separate brigade of the Russian Guard to the temporarily occupied areas of the Donetsk region. Thus, Russia is creating a separate military occupation force in the occupied territories of Ukraine. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It was noted that the Ukrainian military observer Konstantin Mashovets confirmed the deployment of the Russian command of the 116th special forces brigade in the city of Chistyakov, which is 70 km east of Donetsk.
As for the three newly formed brigade formations, the 900th Special Purpose Regiment is located in the village of Melekino (22 km southwest of Mariupol); The 901st Special Forces Regiment is stationed in the city of Snezhny (80 km east of Donetsk); The 902nd Special Purpose Regiment is located seven kilometers north of the city of Chistyakovo.
The brigade will perform “stabilization functions” in the occupied territory of Ukraine permanently.
According to ISW, the locations of the new regiments of the Russian Guard indicate that the Kremlin is actively trying to use these forces to strengthen Russian control over the occupied rear areas.
Mashovets also said that the Russian Guard likely moved up to six thousand troops from Russia to the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine as part of the deployment of the 116th special forces brigade. Thus, the personnel of the Russian Guard in the occupied territories of Ukraine increased to 34.3 thousand military personnel.
Although the Institute for the Study of War could not independently verify this information, these facts confirm Russia’s recent attempts to legalize the Russian Guard’s access to voluntary recruitment, the permission of the Kremlin to transfer heavy military equipment to the Russian Guard, and the basing of the 116th Special. Forces Brigade in the occupied Donetsk region.
According to the ISW report, “Russia is trying to expand the Russian National Guard to create a separate military occupation force. Moscow is likely trying to attract and deploy a military occupation force to further deter Ukraine’s counteroffensive efforts, establish permanent control over the occupied territories, and suppress the parties.”
We remind you that the Russians continue to spread propaganda in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories in the east and south.
It was also reported that the Russian occupiers are trying to buy “certificates” of residents of temporarily occupied territories against Ukraine. People were offered money for “stories about the invasion from the Ukrainian military.”
