Moscow reacted to the Israeli court’s decision on the controversial matters of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church and the desecration of the chapel belonging to it.
Russia has expressed concern about the situation with the presence of Christians in Jerusalem against the background of the Israeli court’s decision on the controversial matters of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church and the desecration of the chapel belonging to it. This is stated in the comments of the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, published on the website of the department on June 15.
It was noted that Israel’s Supreme Court rejected the Jerusalem Orthodox Church’s request to reopen proceedings with the Jewish religious organization. Ateret Kohanim of their possessions in Jerusalem.
Zakharova stressed that such a decision “disturbs the peace between the religions and worries about the position of the Christian community in the Holy Land.”
In connection with this, he called the incident on June 6, when “aggressive Israelis entered the chapel of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church and desecrated it,” not an accident.
“We see in this provocative action an open challenge, clear evidence of the readiness of radical religious forces to initiate Orthodox oppression in the Holy Land,” a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
He called on the Israeli authorities to investigate the incident, punish those responsible and take steps to prevent such actions.
According to Zakharova, Moscow is determined to defend the presence of Christians in the Middle East, demand respect for ensuring the rights and freedoms of believers, and support the Jerusalem Orthodox Church.
Recall that in early May, a scandal erupted over the words of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about anti-Semitic Jews. Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berl Lazar has asked for a public apology from the politician.
Israel later said Russian President Vladimir Putin had apologized for the embarrassing statement in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
