Slovakia’s new government, in particular, plans to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, which oversees high-profile corruption cases.
Thousands of people took to the streets of Slovak cities on Tuesday, December 20, to continue their protests against the actions of the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico. The AP reported it.
It was noted that Slovakia’s new government plans to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, which handles high-profile corruption cases, as well as reduce penalties for corruption and weaken whistleblower protection.
Organizers of the opposition-led protests said rallies took place in the cities of Kosice, Präšev, Poprad, Banska Bystrica, Žilina, Nitra, Trnava, Trenčín, Spiska Nova Ves, Liptovsky Mikulas and Považska Bystrica.
Earlier, Robert Fico said that Ukraine is “not ready” to start negotiations on joining the European Union, but he will not block this decision at the summit on December 14-15.
In addition, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar said that he could not “imagine, under the current circumstances,” Ukraine’s membership and that it still seemed “very far away.”
