Today, December 20, the prime ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia signed a joint declaration on the uniform regional application of European Union sanctions against Russia and Belarus to reduce the risks of evasion restriction. This was reported by the press service of the Lithuanian government.
The document states that closing loopholes and ensuring the effective implementation of EU sanctions is critical to increasing the impact of sanctions and weakening Russia’s ability to continue an aggressive war, so the governments of the three countries are pledged to ensure unified customs control and information exchange, and the relevant authorities of the Baltic countries must establish a regional approach no later than January 31, 2024.
The customs authorities of the three countries agreed to use joint investigation techniques after identifying unreasonable routes of movement of goods and requiring additional documents on the transit or end of use of the goods, additional declarations from manufacturers and exporters to reduce the risk of evading sanctions.
The parties plan to encourage other border countries to join a common regional approach to EU sanctions.
