Sadiq Khan blocked a plan to send cars to Ukraine that did not meet environmental requirements and were then subject to write-offs.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has refused to send cars to Ukraine to be scrapped as part of the city’s Ulez programme. The Telegraph reported it.
In September, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, offered to transfer some of the used cars from Ukraine to London. He said the vehicles can be used in various rescue and transportation roles.
However, in early December, the mayor of London wrote a letter of response to Klitschko, which included a denial. According to him, such deliveries are illegal, as the Ulez recycling program should benefit Londoners from an economic, social and environmental point of view.
Khan’s decision was criticized by the opposition Conservative Party and voluntary organizations involved in helping Ukraine. The refusal was called “absurd”, as aid to Ukraine is “in the interest of all Londoners and the world community.”
We remind you that the Latvian government has decided to transfer another two dozen cars to Ukraine that were confiscated from drunk drivers.
At the beginning of 2023, the Seimas of Latvia supported changes to the law on supporting the civilian population of Ukraine, which created the grounds for the transfer of vehicles confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukrainian ownership. At the beginning of the summer, 66 confiscated cars were found to have been transferred by Latvia to Ukraine.
