Speaker Karine Jean-Pierre announced this at a White House briefing on Wednesday, December 13.
According to her, this is a replenishment budget, through which the Defense Department buys new weapons and equipment from American manufacturers to replace equipment that the United States sends to Ukraine.
The United States has already used 96% of the Pentagon’s resupply funds, and the Defense Department is preparing to use the remaining 4% this month.
Once we run out of these funds, we will not be able to replenish our supplies and replace what we send to Ukraine. That’s what’s at stake,” the spokeswoman said.
She explained that this is one of the reasons for the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his meetings in Congress. During the visit, the United States announced a new tranche of aid to Ukraine worth $200 million.
Answering a journalist’s question whether the Ukrainian president managed to somehow influence the situation, Jean-Pierre emphasized that negotiations on financing were still ongoing, but she could not disclose their details. However, according to the official, this visit was important.
At the same briefing, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that Zelensky was convincing during a joint press conference with President Biden about the need for further support for Ukraine. However, you need to ask them about whether they managed to convince the Zelensky congressmen.
Kirby spoke about the non-public painstaking work between the presidential administration and Congress to negotiate and find a compromise on additional funding and immigration policy.
There are not many days left in the year. There are not many opportunities to provide security assistance to Ukraine. Therefore, it is urgent. We are willing to engage in good faith negotiations and compromises because we need both sides to move forward. The president and the entire team are working very hard on this,” Kirby said.
Jean-Pierre also noted that Congress should not go into recess until it approves a package of additional funding for the needs of Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific region and border security. The absence of such decisions would have negative consequences, the White House representative is convinced.
