‘Theater’: Senate Republicans Tune Out Jan. 6 Hearings

Washington – The January 6, 2021 hearing in the House made headlines, thanks to the extraordinary testimony of several former officials and aides of the Donald Trump administration who denied and sowed the former president’s lies about the 2020 election. attack on the United States Capitol.

But Senate Republicans say they won’t ignore any of them, either.

“cause? Theater? Senator Richard Burr (RNC), who voted in favor of Trump for his role in inciting unrest, told HuffPost when asked if he intended to get involved.

“I don’t have time,” Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) Added and explained that he was focused on approving the bill in return.

At a hearing Monday before a select committee of the bipartisan chamber investigating the riots on Jan. 6, investigators presented evidence that the former president’s staff told him he lost the re-election but was still trying to stay in power.

In one of the videos, former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said Trump ignored advice from him and other senior campaign contributors, telling supporters that votes were still counting and that “the race was called . too early”. Instead, Trump continues to lie about the election, which Trump’s Attorney General William Barr called “false and stupid.”

“If he really believes in these things, I think he has lost touch or strayed from the truth,” Barry told the committee on Jan.6.

At a separate prime-time hearing last week, the committee conducted an interview with Trump’s son and special counsel Ivanka Trump, who said she took Barry’s comments seriously. The House panel also shared testimony from inside the White House in which it said Trump received songs from his supporters calling for the execution of his Vice President Mike Pence.

None of these events shook Republicans this week.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Who has previously criticized Trump for the riots, ignored questions about it. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) Joked that he would definitely “capture important moments in the NFL”.

Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) was the only Republican Senator interviewed by HuffPost to speak at the hearing Monday. Romney said testimony from former Trump administration officials suggests that “there is widespread speculation that there is no credibility to the idea that elections are not entirely legal.”

When specifically asked about Trump’s alleged comments to Pence, Romney said the former president has made many comments, “so it’s hard to answer any of them.”

Meanwhile, Democrats said they admire the Jan.6 committee focusing on testimony from former Trump administration officials.

“They are definitely preparing the case [to indict Trump]”- said Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.). “What if it justifies establishing a very high threshold in the Justice Department? I don’t know.”
