This is stated on the British government website. London said the ships “will help save lives at sea and open vital export routes.”
In the UK it is specified that Norway will join the “ship coalition”.
The department reported that the new association of countries will supply ships and other vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strengthen the capabilities of conducting combat operations at sea.
The new Maritime Capabilities Coalition will coordinate the support that the UK, Norway and other countries provide to Ukraine. In the long term, this will help Ukraine transform its navy, making it more compatible with Western allies, with NATO and strengthen security in the Black Sea, said British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps.
In addition, London noted that in the near future two ships will be handed over to Kyiv for mine clearance. We are talking about Sandown minesweepers (MCMV). The vessels will be purchased by Ukraine with the help of the UK Export Credit Agency.
The Sandown class ships are powered by two diesel engines providing a top speed of 31.4 km/h. The vessels are equipped with trawls for searching and clearing mines. In addition, they have anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons. Sandown-class mine-hunting ships can also be used as patrol ships. They are armed with a 30 mm cannon and five machine guns of different calibers.
