Reuters writes that top Chinese leaders met earlier this month to “coordinate” government efforts to influence Taiwan’s elections next year, according to intelligence collected by Taipei.
Taiwanese officials have warned that Beijing is trying to push voters towards candidates seeking closer ties with China in the Jan. 13 presidential and legislative elections.
China is increasing military and political pressure to try to force the democratically governed island to accept its sovereignty.
According to an internal Taiwan memo, the meeting focused on “ensuring the efficiency and coordination of various election work in Taiwan.” Relevant departments have been tasked with developing outreach programs that include sharing experiences with Taiwanese politicians and offering discounted airfare for Taiwanese living in China to fly home to vote.
China will continue to play out the peace-or-war narrative, which argues that if the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) remains in power, war with China is possible, the report says.
Currently, PPP’s presidential candidate, Vice President William Lai, is leading in the polls.
