The trade associations and chambers of the four European countries believe that Polish transport companies will quickly end the blockade if they are boycotted in Western Europe.
The trade associations of four EU countries, including Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy, have called for a boycott of Polish road hauliers who have staged a transport blockade at the Polish-Ukrainian border. Ukrinform reported this in connection with a letter from these organizations.
“We call on all EU companies and representatives of their respective transport sectors not to renew transport contracts or enter into new contracts with Polish transport companies as long as they continue to block the border of Polish-Ukrainian,” the open appeal stated.
The authors of the letter remind that after Russia began to block Ukrainian ports, Ukraine only has transportation at its disposal for importing or exporting goods from the country. Two years of continuous war made the population miserable. The blockade on the Polish-Ukrainian border, organized by Polish transport trade unions, has been ongoing since November 6, and is planned to be extended until the end of January.
The consequence of this blockade, the document notes, is the increase in prices and shortages of fuel in Ukraine. Only humanitarian and military cargo could cross the border, which led to a 40% drop in exports from Ukraine in November alone. Two Ukrainian drivers died in a queue of more than 2,500 trucks piled up near the border.
The authors of the letter hope that Polish transport companies will quickly end the blockade if Western European companies boycott them while the border blockade in Ukraine continues.
“The Western European market for these (Polish) companies is more important than the Ukrainian transport market. We have no problem with the actions of trade unions, and the Polish transport unions can carry out this inside Poland, without causing damage to the state, which is fighting hard battles for all of us,” – mentioned in the open letter.
The document was signed by representatives of the Belgium-Ukraine Business Club, the Ukrainian-Austrian Association, the Netherlands-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce, and the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce in Italy.
We remind you that there are more than three thousand trucks lined up at the Polish border. Polish carriers continue to block the border in four directions.
Meanwhile, Ukraine figured out how to get around the blockade: Ukrzaliznytsia would bring trucks across the border en masse.
