A senior EU official said that “Hungarian hooligans” are a problem for EU policy, but there are ways to solve the problem.
The European Union will find a way to provide more financial support to Ukraine, even if Hungary vetoes the 50 billion euros. This was said by an unnamed senior official, reported on Friday, December 8, Reuters.
According to him, the leaders of the EU countries “will follow their obligations.”
“We know how existential this is. European leaders are responsible people, at least 26… They will stick to their promises,” he said.
If Orban vetoes the 50 billion euros for Ukraine planned to be given in 2027, the bloc can allocate a smaller amount for a shorter period, or the remaining 26 EU countries can extend their assistance to Ukraine on a bilateral basis, the official said.
At the same time, the official suggests that a compromise can still be found in Hungary, as happened in December last year, when the EU allocated 18 billion euros to Ukraine. At the same time, he added that many members of the bloc were disappointed with the position of the Hungarian government.
“The general consensus is that Hungarian hooligans are a problem when it comes to our policy regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” the official said.
As you know, Viktor Orban has threatened to block all EU aid to Ukraine and the further movement of our country in the bloc if EU leaders do not agree to reconsider their entire strategy for supporting Kyiv.
