The transfer of Gripen aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force was discussed by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces Mikael Büden. This was announced on December 8 by the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Ivan Gavrilyuk, the defense department reported on Facebook.
According to him, fruitful bilateral work is now underway to transfer Gripen aircraft to Ukraine. However, there are “certain issues related to NATO.” The deputy head of the Ministry of Defense expressed hope that “with joint efforts we will be able to obtain these aircraft.”
And the Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, General Mikael Büden, said that the issue of transferring Gripen aircraft to Ukraine is being discussed at both the political and military operational levels.
I know that the dialogue between our countries continues. So we are waiting for political decisions,” he said.
As you know, back in February of this year, Ukraine sent a request to Sweden for the transfer of Gripen fighters. These aircraft are in service, in particular, with Sweden, Thailand, the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa and Brazil.
Let us recall that in November, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny stated that American F-16 fighters, partners promising to transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in early 2024, may now be less useful at the front. Part of the less usefulness of these combat aircraft is due to the fact that the Russian Federation has improved its air defense.
