The head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry, Juraj Blanar, said Ukraine’s entry into the European Union was “still a long way off.”
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar says he can’t “think, under the current circumstances,” of Ukraine’s membership and Ukraine is said to be “still very far from membership.” He said this in an interview with Standard.
“This issue is very serious. And given the current circumstances, I cannot even imagine. I myself would be interested to know how, for example, Ursula von der Leyen would justify the proposal to join or the opening of negotiations on being Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and at the same time keep the answer to the question of how to start negotiating with a country in a state of military conflict,” said the Slovak official.
According to him, there should be hope of membership in the future for Ukraine, “but in compliance with all the rules, as it is observed in relation to all other countries in the Eastern Partnership, such as Moldova and Georgia, or relating to the Western Balkans.”
He assured that Slovakia is ready to support Ukraine on its way to the EU, but the Ukrainian state “must fully meet all the criteria.”
As you know, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the war in Ukraine is a “frozen conflict” that seems impossible to solve by arming the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Fico also spoke in favor of normalizing relations with Russia.
