Two Slovaks on a bus: how they blocked the Ukrainian border

Yesterday’s blockade of the Ukrainian border with Slovakia was an isolated and unofficial act of protest.

The previous day, Slovak carriers apparently joined the protest of their Polish colleagues and began blocking the Ukrainian border. Blocking truck traffic began on November 21 at 13:30. However, less than 24 hours later, the protesters made a concession and the border blockade was lifted.

Subsequently, it turned out that this action was not completely official, but two Slovaks blocked the border, blocking the road with a grain. So what is known about the situation – read the story.

“Unknown people blocked traffic without warning”

The crossing of the Slovak border with Ukraine for trucks was blocked at the Vyshne Nemetskoe checkpoint adjacent to the Uzhgorod checkpoint. According to the Slovak news agency TASR, only one car was blocking the crossing.

Later, the head of the Slovak transport union, Stanislav Skala, said that his organization had nothing to do with this protest. Right now, he said, the organization is waiting for negotiations between the officials of the European Union, Poland and Ukraine before officially starting to block the Ukrainian border with their Polish counterparts.

Ukrainian customs also noted in Telegram that “unknown persons blocked the movement of cargo transport without warning,” but added that Kyiv had not received official information from the Slovak side.

Negotiations with border guards

This morning, the spokesman of the State Border Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, said that the Slovak protesters at midnight unblocked the Vyshne Nemetskoye checkpoint and began to enter the trucks. In total, 173 trucks were registered to enter the queue in the last 24 hours, and 104 were registered to exit.

As Demchenko explained, it is possible to unblock the border after negotiations with Slovak border guards. However, later, the protest itself did not have permits, and the border was blocked by two unknown men in a bus with a trailer.

“Not so official” event

This was confirmed by the Deputy Minister of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure of Ukraine Sergei Derkach. According to him, blocking the Ukrainian-Slovak border is “not completely official.”

“At midnight, the police actually removed a car that was standing and blocking the traffic. This action that took place is completely unofficial and does not represent any carriers in Slovakia. It is a single action. Absolutely without any documents. The police drew up a report on the offender “As colleagues from Slovakia told us, he is one of the carriers, but he is not a member of any big association,” said Derkach on Radio Liberty.

The Union of Carriers of Slovakia also confirmed that they did not take any action to block the Ukrainian border, the deputy minister added.

“We are talking now through our colleagues from the Slovak Embassy with possible, I would say, protesters, with the organization of Slovakian carriers, who say it could block the border. But they confirmed that not yet they have planned this strike until now. , because they are waiting for answers from the European Union and from the government of Slovakia to their request,” explained Derkach.
