There is a real possibility that the M-55 will return to frontline service to bolster Russia’s limited reconnaissance capabilities over Ukraine. Operating at high altitude allows the sensors to operate over considerable distances, the UK MoD said in a statement.
A total of five M-55 Geophysics aircraft were produced, but only one of them is currently in operation. British intelligence believes that the M-55 will carry out operations in relatively safe Russian airspace.
