Approval of Biden’s request would not only allow for continued aid to Ukraine and Israel, but also significant investments in the Indo-Pacific region and humanitarian aid around the world.
The United States Department of Defense has called on Congress to approve President Joe Biden’s request for additional funding for Ukraine to fight Russian aggression and Israel to fight Hamas. They emphasized that aid to these countries is also needed to protect US national interests. Pentagon Deputy Speaker Sabrina Singh announced this on Thursday, November 16, in a video briefing.
He noted that the additional budget request would meet America’s national security needs, Singh emphasized.
“This will be an investment in the military-industrial area of the state and will allow the replenishment of the Pentagon’s weapons reserves, which were previously allocated in the form of external aid,” said Singh.
He pointed out that the department currently only has $4.9 billion to use in the form of PDA (Presidential Authorization Allocations) packages. In addition, about $1.1 billion remains to replenish the US Department of Defense’s own reserves.
More will be needed to support Ukraine, Singh said.
“We know that Ukraine is constantly making efforts, is conducting a counteroffensive, they need continuous support on a regular basis. Therefore, we know that we have to continue to meet their needs,” said Pentagon spokesman.
This issue, he explained, will definitely be discussed at the next meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine. The Pentagon will officially announce the date and plans for the Ramstein meeting in the coming days, Singh added.
US President Joe Biden is said to be trying to convince the US Congress to support aid to both Ukraine and Israel and approve a new $106 billion aid package, including more than $61 billion in funds to help Ukraine.
However, on November 2, the US House of Representatives, led by new Speaker Mike Johnson, passed a bill to allocate military aid to Israel totaling $14.3 billion. The project does not provide assistance to Ukraine. However, the upper house of Congress failed the bill, which did not contain aid to Ukraine.
