Last Tuesday, Prime Minister Antonio Costa resigned following news that he was being investigated for corruption. It turned out that the prosecutor’s office incorrectly transcribed the wiretap recordings and admitted that there was a mistake in the names – Economy Minister António Costa Silva was under suspicion.
The former prime minister has repeatedly insisted that he is not to blame.
António Costa resigned on November 7 following searches at his official residence as part of an investigation into corruption related to the awarding of lithium exploration and mining concessions in the north of the country, in the municipality of Montalegre.
He did not consider himself guilty and denies his involvement in illegal activities, but at the same time he understands the seriousness of the accusation, and that it will not allow him to remain in the chair in the future.
As part of this case, both the Minister of Transport and the head of the Natural Resources Agency received suspicion. An arrest warrant was issued for the head of the administration of the Fund, as well as the mayor of Sines, a small port city in the south of the country.
The country’s president, a representative of the liberal conservatives opposed to Wednesday, Marcel Rebelo de Souzi, accepted his resignation last week. Elections will be held on March 10, 2024.
