The training took place on the westernmost island of the country, Yonaguni, located 2 thousand km southwest of the country’s capital Tokyo, Reuters reports.
About 200 island officials and members of the Japanese armed forces, known as the Self-Defense Forces, took part in the exercise. However, SOF helicopters and landing craft from ships that sailed more than 1 thousand km from the main Japanese islands were unable to join the exercises due to strong winds.
Today we provided disaster training, but it also gives people an opportunity to think about what would be useful in the event of an emergency in Taiwan, said Koji Sugama, a local official responsible for preparing the island’s 1,700 residents for disasters. .
Yonaguni is located just 110 km from Taiwan, which China considers its territory and has never ruled out using force to gain control over it.
Last August, in response to a visit to Taiwan by then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, China conducted large-scale military maneuvers around the island with missile launches, which posed a potential threat to Yonaguni.
Concern over China’s increased military activity, as well as fears that a Russian attack on Ukraine could encourage Beijing to strike Taiwan, prompted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to unveil a plan to double defense spending over the next five years.
