Finnish border guards at checkpoints in the southeast of the country have stopped allowing people to arrive from Russia on bicycles into the country, Yle television and radio company reports.
Jukka Lukkari, deputy commander of the Border Guard of South-East Finland, said that illegal immigrants are increasingly trying to enter Finland on bicycles.
“There were about 30 such cases last week. This is clearly a growing phenomenon,” he said.
In the past, people crossing the border on bicycles used them for short, local trips, Luccari said.
“Today people are trying to cross the border without the necessary papers, without working bicycle lights and without helmets,” he explained.
Noticing that the number of cyclists was increasing, it was decided to combat this phenomenon. Since last Thursday, people have been unable to enter Finland from Russia on bicycles through border crossings in the country’s southeast.
“From the Finnish point of view, it makes sense to focus the control on road transport. This will help to better control cross-border traffic,” Luckari said.
In the past, Finland banned the entry of Russian vehicles. About 3,000 people cross the eastern border every day in both directions through checkpoints in southeastern Finland.
This year, less than 3,200 asylum seekers arrived in Finland by the end of September.
Let’s recall that Finland previously reported that the Russian telecommunications cable Baltika in the Baltic Sea was damaged.
