Israel has been criticized by the UN and WHO for alleged attacks directly on medical infrastructure in the Gaza Strip or on locations near medical facilities.
In response, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said at a briefing today that Israel carried out strikes “based on intelligence” and acted within the framework of international law. He stressed that the country’s military and political leadership does not want to “strike hospitals and ambulances.”
Hagari also shared declassified information detailing “Hamas strongholds” located under, inside and adjacent to three hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
Hagari, in particular, said that Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in Gaza City, is located above the Hamas command center.
He also showed reporters a video of what he said was the entrance to a tunnel located at the Qatari-funded Sheikh Hamad Hospital in the Gaza Strip. Other footage, he said, showed Hamas militants shooting at Israeli soldiers right from the hospital.
In addition, Hagari said that an Indonesian hospital in the northern Gaza Strip was used as an operational headquarters for militants.
He showed satellite images from 2010 and 2023, before and after the hospital was built, saying it was built on top of an “underground city” with a network of tunnels.
Hagari also showed photographs of what he said was a launch pad in front of an Indonesian hospital from which missiles were launched into Israel.
