A bill to aid Israel without mentioning Ukraine was approved following a vote in the US House of Representatives.
The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to provide military aid to Israel totaling $14.3 billion. The document does not provide assistance for Ukraine. The New York Times writes about it on Thursday, November 2.
The bill proposed by Republicans was supported by 226 members of the House, with 196 voting against it.
“This is a bad result, because all previous aid packages for Israel have enjoyed broad support,” the NYT wrote.
The document states that most of the cost will go to weapons for Israel, including $4 billion for the Iron Dome and David’s Sling air defense systems. It also includes $200 million to protect US personnel and evacuate US citizens. The bill does not consider humanitarian aid to Gaza, which US President Joe Biden has requested.
Before this, the Democratic Party called for the consolidation of aid to Israel and Ukraine. The upper house of the US Congress – the Senate – supports this idea. However, many Republicans in the lower chamber are opposed to passing more aid to Ukraine, creating divisions between the two chambers.
US President Joe Biden had previously promised to veto this document.
“This bill would disrupt the usual bipartisan approach to emergency national security assistance by conditioning funding on offsets, politicizing aid to Israel, and treating Israel differently than our other allies and partners, ” wrote the White House Office of Management and Budget.
The Republican Party has put forward demands for US President Joe Biden’s administration to further support Ukraine.
Recall that the Biden administration asked Congress to approve $106 billion in support of Ukraine, Israel and other foreign aid, hoping that such a package deal would help approve the full amount. At the same time, Congress wants to vote separately for such initiatives.
