The Wall Street Journal writes about this.
Russia plans to replace the Wagnerites in Africa with other PVKs. We are talking about “Redoubt” and “Convoy”. These military companies are financed by friends of the Russian dictator Gennady Timchenko and Arkady Rottenberg.
Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov heads the structure that is responsible for Russian operations on the continent, and the activities are controlled by GRU official Andrei Averyanov. At the end of August, Yevkurov visited Libya, Burkina Faso, Mali and the Central African Republic. In the footage of the trips you can see Averyanov and the Redut commander Konstantin Mirzayants. Pikalov, who previously led the military operations of the Wagnerites in Africa, heads the Convoy.
Russian mercenaries work in many African countries:
-
Sudanese;
-
Mali;
-
Libya;
-
Mozambique.
By 2013, the share of Russian weapons in Africa fluctuated between 11-25%, and after 2017 it grew to more than 40%. As of 2020, half of the weapons imported into Africa were Russian.
In addition, since 2019, Algeria, Ghana, Zambia, Nigeria, and Rwanda have relied on Russian nuclear energy. In particular, the terrorist country promised them to build several nuclear power plants over time.
