Social networks began to criticize such an initiative to spend money during the war. After all, according to many, these means are much more effective in purchasing weapons for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Sofia Kyiv National Nature Reserve responded to the scandal. They insist that the domes of the cathedral and the crosses on them could collapse at any time.
“Sophia of Kiev” emphasized that the extremely unsatisfactory condition of the roof, structures and domes of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev has become not just a problem for the museum, but also a threat to preserving the integrity of the unique monument included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In recent years, the reserve has repeatedly raised the issue with the Ministry of Culture about the need to carry out such work, but due to lack of funding, the situation only worsened.
This led to the fact that on January 14, 2022, during a sharp deterioration in weather conditions with gusts of wind, a cross fell from the southeastern bathhouse of the St. Sophia Cathedral, which many perceived as an “unkind sign” that foreshadowed a great war.
Thanks to patrons of the arts, the cross was restored and returned to its place, but since all the crosses of Sofia were installed around the same time, their condition is of great concern.
St. Sophia Cathedral is one of the most valuable landmarks in Ukraine and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
