The speaker of the US House of Representatives suggested not combining new aid to Ukraine and Israel in one package. He wanted the House to vote on such initiatives individually.
The new Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has proposed allocating $14.3 billion in aid to Israel. Politico reported this on Monday, October 30.
The publication notes that Johnson has already introduced a corresponding bill in Congress. It is scheduled to be reviewed this week. At the same time, aid to Israel is considered separate from aid to Ukraine.
However, Politico predicts that Johnson’s decision to unbundle the relief packages could face serious challenges.
“As Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democrat) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Republican) are in favor of US President Joe Biden’s proposal to combine aid to Ukraine and Israel in a $106 billion package.
It is known that the package that Johnson proposed to accept includes: $4 billion for Israel to purchase two missile defense systems – Iron Dome and David’s Sling, $4.4 billion for the Pentagon to replace stockpiles of weapons and equipment, which sent to Israel, as well as reimbursement, $3.5 billion for the State Department in foreign military funding to aid Israel.
In the United States, the House of Representatives of the American Congress elected its new speaker after the resignation of Kevin McCarthy. Republican Mike Johnson, an ally of former President Donald Trump, became speaker of the lower house.
As reported, the US presidential administration has asked Congress to approve $106 billion in support of Ukraine, Israel and other foreign aid, hoping that the package deal will help approve the full amount.
