National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said on CNN that Washington will act, if necessary, to protect its troops and American assets:
We take our national security interests in the region very seriously, so President [Байден] brought in two carrier strike groups… We want to do everything to make sure that we send a signal to everyone involved in this, including Iran, that we take our national security interests very seriously. We will protect and defend our troops. And we will do this at the time and in the way that we deem necessary.
On October 29, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the risk of the war between Israel and Hamas escalating into a broader regional conflict was “real.”
Asked on ABC News about what to expect if Iranian-backed groups continue to attempt attacks on U.S. forces in the region, Sullivan said:
The President has been very open about this: If American troops are attacked by Iran and its proxies, we will respond… and I think the Iranians got our message. We are, of course, taking all necessary measures to protect our forces, increase our vigilance and work with other countries in the region to try to keep this conflict that is currently happening in Israel and Gaza from escalating into a regional conflict, but the risk is real, so vigilance is high and the steps we are taking to contain it and prevent it are serious, systematic and ongoing.
