The US president has ordered strikes on two sites in eastern Syria used by Iran and its affiliates.
US forces struck two areas in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups. This was stated in a statement by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, published on the Pentagon’s website on October 26.
“These precision self-defense strikes are in response to a series of prolonged and largely unsuccessful attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militant groups that began on October 17, ” said the statement.
It was noted that as a result of these attacks, an American contractor died of a heart attack. Another 21 American troops were slightly wounded.
US troops have carried out strikes on targets in Syria at the direction of President Joe Biden.
“The President has no higher priority than the safety of American personnel, and he has made clear that the United States will not tolerate such attacks and will defend itself, its personnel and its interests,” said the Secretary of Defense.
Austin added that if attacks by Iranian supporters on American troops continue, the United States “will not hesitate to take additional necessary steps to protect our people.”
Media previously reported that two dozen US troops were injured in a series of drone attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria last week.
