According to investigators, Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson attempted to intentionally crash a plane carrying 83 passengers on a flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco.
During this flight, Emerson was not on duty and was flying as a passenger on a so-called reserve ticket. Airlines allow their pilots and flight attendants to travel on such tickets if seats are available.
Moreover, if the plane is full, employees sometimes sit on a jump seat in the cabin. Joseph Emerson took it over.
At some point, Joseph, unexpectedly for the crew, tried to turn off the engines. The pilots managed to overcome the resistance of the 44-year-old man. As he was led to the rear of the plane, he tried to open the emergency exit.
Emerson told the FBI that he took narcotic mushrooms before attempting to crash the plane. He had never tried psychedelics before. Investigators do not believe the attempted crash was planned as a terrorist attack or that Emerson had ideological motives.
