The US House of Representatives on October 25 supported Johnson’s candidacy for this post. For the first time since the beginning of October, they managed to collect a sufficient number of votes – 217. Reuters reports this.
Elected Johnson is a representative of the Republican Party and a supporter of former US President Donald Trump. He actively supported him during the impeachment hearings. He also opposes abortion and LGBT people.
He is also opposed to providing assistance to Ukraine. Of the seven votes for aid to Ukraine, he voted against six times. In May 2022, he insisted that aid to Ukraine should not take precedence over domestic US issues.
It is noted that Johnson, 51, will be the “least experienced Speaker of the House in decades” because he is a relative newcomer to politics.
Let us remind you that the elections for the post of Speaker of Congress began after former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from office. He reached an agreement with the White House to unblock the government and promise to introduce a bill to help Ukraine.
