Republicans are meeting for the second time in a day to vote on a candidate for House Speaker.
The leadership of the Republican majority in the US House of Representatives has nominated five candidates for the position of speaker. This happened on Tuesday, October 24, after Congressman Tom Emmer suddenly withdrew his candidacy from the race just hours after being elected, The Hill reports.
It is noted that Byron Donalds (Florida), Chuck Fleischmann (Tennessee), Mark Green (Tennessee), Kevin Gern (Oklahoma), Mike Johnson (Louisiana) and Roger William (Texas) have been announced as candidates for the position of Speaker from among the Republican majority.
However, Kevin Gern later announced that he was leaving the race and announced his support for Mike Johnson. Therefore, five candidates will compete for the speaker’s seat.
The conference of the Republican Party, which will vote on the nomination for this post, is scheduled to meet on Tuesday at 20:00 (3:00 am Wednesday in Kyiv). Moreover, a vote by the entire House of Representatives (including Democrats) was not planned for the same day.
Remind us that on Tuesday it became known that the Republicans decided on a candidate, supporting Tom Emmer, who is considered a supporter of supporting Ukraine. However, within hours, Emmer withdrew his candidacy after former President Donald Trump criticized the choice and some Republicans refused to further support Emmer’s candidacy.
As reported, Emmer became the third Republican Party speaker candidate to fail to win the post in the past three weeks. Before that, Jim Jordan failed, and even earlier, Steve Scalise had to withdraw his name from the election.
