Trump strongly criticized the choice of his fellow party members, after which they refused to support Tom Emmer, whom they had voted for only hours earlier.
Republican Congressman Tom Emmer has dropped out of the race for the position of Speaker of the US House of Representatives just hours after being confirmed by the Republican majority. Some American media reported this on Tuesday, October 24.
So, CNN reported that former President Donald Trump spoke publicly against Emmer’s candidacy. In addition, according to the channel, Trump’s team made phone calls to members of the Republican Party and urged them to oppose Emmer.
It was also reported that Trump on social media spoke harshly about the election of Emmer as the Republican candidate for the post of speaker. He called him a “globalist RINO” – short for “Republican in Name Only” – whose elevation was a “tragic mistake.”
The Hill said Emmer withdrew his name from the running after some Republicans signaled they would not support him in the House, making it impossible to get enough votes in a House floor vote.
We remind you that on Tuesday the Republican majority in the House of Representatives held internal votes, where Tom Emmer, known for his pro-Ukrainian position, received the majority of votes. Emmer became the third GOP speaker candidate to fail to win the post in the last three weeks. Before that, Jim Jordan failed, and even earlier, Steve Scalise had to withdraw his name from the election.
Meanwhile, several important bills remain blocked in Congress, in particular, appropriating aid to Ukraine and Israel.
