A massive accident occurred in the United States: 158 cars crashed into a bridge. At least seven people died and 25 were hospitalized, CNN reports.

The accident occurred on October 23 near the city of New Orleans, on Highway 55. During the collision, one of the cars flew from the bridge into the river, but the driver escaped.

A massive accident occurred due to heavy fog caused by burning swamps. Meteorologists earlier reported a “super fog” in the area west of New Orleans. It is a thick fog that forms in damp and smoky conditions and can reduce visibility by up to three metres.

It was reported that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was a tanker truck carrying hazardous liquids.

The number of victims may rise as security services are still clearing rubble and people may be trapped in vehicles.

CNN recalls that Louisiana has been battling unprecedented wildfires, extreme heat and an ongoing drought that has affected 62% of the state since the summer.

The lack of rain, combined with intense summer heat, has dried up the marshes and reduced the depth of groundwater. The observed fire was raging on and below the ground surface.
