Support measures are related, first of all, to the provision of housing and food to the citizens of Ukraine. However, these will only be valid until the end of the year.
At an extraordinary meeting on June 8, the Latvian government agreed to continue supporting Ukrainian citizens who came to Latvia. This was reported by the portal Delfi.
Two normative acts were on the agenda of the government meeting – amendments to the Law on Support for Civilians of Ukraine and new rules of the Cabinet of Ministers on providing basic support to residents of Ukraine.
The amendments provide, first, that such basic support as accommodation of Ukrainian refugees will be provided for up to 120 days, but not more than until December 31, 2022. Second, the changes in the law imply that individuals and legal that entity will also receive compensation for the residence of civilians in Ukraine for up to 120 days, but not later than December 31, 2022.
In addition, the bill provides the possibility for Ukrainian refugees who cannot find housing to also receive housing support after the 120-day period, but no more than until December 31, 2022.
Since the deadline for receiving basic support for many refugees will expire in June, it is necessary to clarify what the next situation, the instructions in the bill.
At the same time, all Ukrainian refugees will have the right to receive housing assistance, regardless of the period after February 24, 2022 that they arrive in Latvia. In turn, food for citizens of Ukraine who have applied for it from May 25 will be provided for up to 30 days, but no later than December 31, 2022.
These support measures are expected to require € 7.87 million from the state budget this year and € 964,900 next year. A large portion of the funds – approximately 5.76 million euros – of this amount are intended to provide housing to refugees.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, approximately 32,000 peaceful refugees have been registered in Latvia, and nearly 26,000 refugees have received a residence permit with the right to work.
