Ukrainian drones and other precision weapons make Russian armored vehicles increasingly vulnerable and complicate ground attacks.
Russian troops are moving new forces to Avdeevka, Donetsk region, despite heavy losses and difficulty in storming the positions of the defense forces. This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It was noted that, according to Russian “military correspondents”, on October 22, there were no significant changes on the Avdeevsky front. It is likely that the invaders will stop again after a major offensive fails and suffers heavy losses.
A Russian “military letter” says that Ukrainian forces “unexpectedly” counterattacked in the direction of Pesky (8 km southwest of Donetsk) and drove Russian troops out of positions in the area. Another “military sulator” says that the statements about the advance of Ukrainian troops in the area of Pisky and Opytny (4 km south of Avdiivka) are false.
According to geolocation footage published on October 21, the invaders advanced slightly southeast of Pervomaisky (11 km southwest of Avdiivka). According to the Russians, their troops have not completely “cleared” the territory of the Avdeevsky rock dump, and this territory is a disputed “gray” zone.
A Kremlin-linked blogger speaks of difficulties that could contribute to a “positional deadlock” in Russia’s offensive operations in the Avdeevsky direction. In particular, in a static front line with large numbers of personnel and fortified areas on both sides, it is difficult to conduct a war of maneuver.
At the same time, Ukrainian drones and other precision weapons made armored vehicles more vulnerable and made ground attacks more difficult. While the invaders were experiencing difficulties in overcoming the Ukrainian mines near Avdiivka and could not completely destroy the material and technical base of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which allowed the Ukrainian command to quickly transfer personnel to the critical area.
Russian sources have previously indicated that Ukrainian defense fortifications pose a serious challenge to the advance around Avdiivka. The Ukrainian Armed Forces faced similar challenges in southern Ukraine in the first weeks of the counteroffensive. However, it is not yet clear whether the Russians will be able to adapt to these conditions, as Ukrainian forces did after their first retreats in June 2023.
Ukrainian sources added that the enemy continues to move personnel in the direction of Avdeevka to support offensive efforts, despite heavy losses. The representative of the Tauride group of Ukrainian troops, Colonel Alexander Shtupun, said that the enemy is moving personnel from Russian territory directly in the direction of Avdeevsky to compensate for personnel losses.
The Ukrainian military observer Konstantin Mashovets added that the Russian military command recently transferred some Russian regiments mobilized in this direction. In his opinion, this indicates that Russia does not plan to stop operations in this direction.
According to him, the Russian military also moved units of the 57th motorized rifle regiment of the 6th motorized rifle division of the 3rd Army Corps of the Western Military District to the Spartak-Yakovka-Mineral-Kashtanovo area (4 km south-5 km southeast . of Avdeevka).
Let’s recall that the Russian troops in the Avdeevka area began to use tactics that involved the creation of tunnels. Also at the front, Russian soldiers were seen using special remote control vehicles to deliver ammunition.
