German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during the opening of the first synagogue built in Saxony-Anhalt in the city of Dessau, pledged to eradicate anti-Semitism in the country and support Jewish life in Germany. He was quoted by AFP on Sunday, October 22.
“There should be zero tolerance for anti-Semitism in Germany,” Scholz said.
He promised that Germany would “protect and preserve” Jewish life.
The Chancellor said he felt deeply ashamed as he watched anti-Semitic sentiments and xenophobia flare up in the country.
“Terrorists are exacerbating the situation and sowing hatred. And not only in the Middle East, but here as well. We have to do everything to prevent the seed from sprouting,” he said.

The German government condemned the attempted arson attack on the Jewish center in Berlin on the night of Wednesday, October 18.
