The date of the experiment coincides with Russia’s decision on the CTBT, and may increase tensions between Moscow and Washington, Bloomberg wrote.
The United States conducted tests at a nuclear test site in Nevada. The country’s Ministry of Energy announced this on October 18.
It was noted that the team of scientists conducted an underground chemical explosion to improve the ability to “detect the low-level results of nuclear explosions around the world.”
“These experiments advance our efforts to develop new technologies in support of US nuclear nonproliferation goals. “They help reduce global nuclear threats by improving the detection of underground nuclear explosive tests,” said National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) spokesman Corey Hinderstein.
The department clarified that explosive chemicals and radioisotope tracers were used to conduct the experiment.
Let’s remember that on the day of the Nevada test, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a bill to withdraw the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) in order to “remove the imbalance between Russia and the United States . in terms of the amount of obligations.” As is known, Washington never ratified the agreement.
According to Bloomberg, such tests are called subcritical and are not prohibited by the CTBT. In addition, the United States planned the experiment even before it was known that Russia might withdraw its ratification of the treaty.
At the same time, analysts worry that the actions of the National Nuclear Security Administration could be misinterpreted and lead to further escalation, “especially given the intense hostility between the United States and Russia, intensified by the war in Ukraine.”
