CNN reports this with reference to two American officials.
Officials indicated that the missiles were fired by the Iranian-backed Houthi militias, a militant group active in Yemen and fighting in the ongoing conflict in Yemen. About two or three missiles were intercepted, a second US official said.
It is not yet clear what the missiles were aimed at. The missiles may have been fired at the US destroyer USS Carney or launched towards another target.
The incident comes amid high concerns about possible Iranian aggression as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following an attack by Hamas militants on Israel. Iran has long supported Hamas.
Let us remind you that on October 18, the destroyer USS Carney passed through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea. The US Navy Command has announced its intention to help “ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East.”
