In 11 countries in central and eastern Europe, more than 60% of Ukrainians of working age registered as job seekers found work.
European Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights Nicolas Schmidt said the influx of Ukrainians into the European Union after the mass invasion and their access to the labor market helped improve employment rates in the EU. He said this in an interview with Radio Liberty.
According to Schmidt, in 11 countries in central and eastern Europe, more than 60% of Ukrainians of working age registered as job seekers found work.
“This has had a definite impact on improving the situation with labor shortages in many European labor markets,” said the European Commissioner.
“We don’t have an exact number of all member countries, because only a few of them gave us numbers. We think that about 1.5 million Ukrainians – and this is the number in April 2023 – have signed a contract, that is , found a job,” he said.
Schmidt cited data from public employment services in 19 EU countries, according to which, in April 2023, refugees from the war in Ukraine signed more than 1.5 million contracts in these countries. By October 2023, this number had risen to 1.87 million.
We remind you that the Council of the European Union approved the proposal of the European Commission and extended for another year – until March 4, 2025 – the period of validity of the temporary protection mechanism for citizens of Ukraine who became refugees after the start of a full-scale war on the part of Russia.
As reported, the share of refugees planning to stay abroad doubled throughout the year.
