Over two years, the number of women in the army has increased by 12 thousand – almost 43 thousand military personnel are now serving. The press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported this today, October 16.
The department also explained what has changed during this time in matters of equality:
- All restrictions on access of military personnel to all positions have been lifted. Now women can be drivers, grenade launchers, infantry fighting vehicle commanders, repairmen, machine gunners, snipers, etc.;
- Previously, contracts for military service were concluded by women aged 18 to 40, while men had no such restriction. Now, from 18 to 60 years old, representatives of both sexes can become contract soldiers;
- the duration of maternity leave, determined in a medical report, is counted towards the length of service in a military rank;
- women were given the opportunity to receive military education at all levels;
- systematic work has been organized to improve the level of competence of personnel to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and men;
- aspects of equality are taken into account when developing regulatory legal acts. All documents developed by the Ministry of Defense undergo gender examination;
- Work continues on the logistical support of female military personnel. In particular, the creation of new models of military uniforms and personal protective equipment, taking into account anthropometric data;
- each branch commander received a full-time adviser. The function of a freelance adviser on gender issues has also been introduced in the system of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine – these are 81 freelance and 74 on a voluntary basis;
- Regular work is carried out on measures to prevent sexual harassment and other human rights violations. In particular, gender-related cases, including domestic violence and discrimination in the workplace;
- Cooperation has been established with international partners – the UN Women in Ukraine, OSCE, NATO, as well as with national public organizations.
Ukraine continues to integrate NATO standards into the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular in the field of gender equality. We strictly follow the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and strategic planning documents that guarantee equal rights for women and men in the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the Ministry of Defense notes.
