The Psyche spacecraft is set to study a metal-rich asteroid and probe its nickel-iron core. The mission will also test the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) system. Psyche has a long journey ahead to the Main Asteroid Belt.
The asteroid Psyche is 280 km wide and 232 km long. Scientists don’t know exactly what it looks like, but it is clear that its surface contains nickel and iron. The asteroid is believed to be an ancient protoplanetary core, so thanks to it, humanity will learn more about the formation of planets.
