A bill to provide simultaneous military support for the two countries could prompt some Republicans to vote for it, the sources said.
Joe Biden’s administration is discussing the possibility of combining emergency aid to Israel and Ukraine with a request to Congress. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing sources of knowledge.
It is argued that “this will increase the likelihood that Congress will approve aid to Kyiv, despite growing opposition from Republicans in the House of Representatives.”
“One official said the move could make sense because it would deter those on the far right who strongly oppose more aid to Ukraine but strongly support aid to Israel,” the article said.
The sources believe that linking the two aid packages “may encourage some Republicans to vote for the combined package, because they do not want to block military aid to Israel.”
It is known that Israel has asked the United States to provide missiles to the Iron Dome air defense complex, bombs, and other ammunition and to strengthen cooperation in the field of intelligence exchange.
However, the newspaper warned that combining requests for military aid to Ukraine and Israel could increase the strain on US reserves as it supports both countries at the same time. In addition, Israel’s request for 155mm high-explosive fragmentation shells “may irritate Ukrainian supporters, as these ammunitions are in short supply and Kyiv desperately needs them.”
At the same time, as the newspaper said, “there are no final decisions on the consolidation of requests.”
It was previously reported that the Pentagon has requested aid for Ukraine and Israel. US Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said Congress must approve additional funding to expedite the transfer of ammunition to both Ukraine and Israel.
