The publication’s correspondent writes that he saw only one body in military uniform among the victims of the attack.
Mortuary officials said they saw no evidence of many military personnel among the dead, and most of the victims appeared to be elderly, the release said.
In many cases, people are difficult to identify because they have received very significant injuries, journalists continue.
On Friday, the Kharkov morgue looked like the scene of a mass murder: several dozen employees were sorting through the bodies of people, reporters from an American newspaper write.
As a result of the shelling of the village of Groza, a cafe was destroyed in which local residents had gathered for a memorial service for the Ukrainian Armed Forces who died at the front.
There were about 60 people at the wake, at least 52 are considered dead. Among those killed was a six-year-old child, whose body was discovered on Friday.
Let us recall that in response to a request from journalists to comment on the attack on the village of Groza, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on October 6 again repeated that Russian troops only attack military targets and infrastructure.
International observers and journalists have repeatedly provided evidence that the Russian army constantly attacks civilian targets, resulting in the deaths of Ukrainian civilians.
The hero’s family died
As a result of the shelling of the village of Groza in the Kharkov region, the family of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier Andrei Kozyr, who was commemorated that day, was killed.
Before the full-scale Russian invasion, Andrei Kozyr and his son Denis were working in Poland. From the first days of the war, both returned to Ukraine and joined the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Both fought near Popasna in the summer of 2022.
Andrei received a fatal wound to the neck on the third day at the front. He was buried in the Dnepropetrovsk region, since at that time his homeland – the village of Groza – was under Russian occupation. In the fall of 2022, Groza was liberated thanks to a successful offensive by the Defense Forces.
Over time, Denis Kozyr was demobilized due to health conditions. In the summer of 2023, Denis got married. In the meantime, the family decided to bury Andrei Kozyr in his homeland – in the cemetery in Groza. On October 5, the body of the fallen warrior was transported, and family and neighbors gathered to remember him.
Around noon, Russian Iskander missiles hit the building where almost the entire village had gathered, in which, after the occupation, out of 500 people, about 100 remained.
As a result of the Russian strike, the entire family of Andrei Kozyr was killed: the Russians killed Denis, his wife, his wife’s mother, grandmother, and grandfather.
