Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjarto said that Hungary needs guarantees from Ukraine that OTP Bank will not be added to the list of international sponsors of war in the future. Telex.hu reported it.
“Ukraine’s exclusion of OTP from the list of international sponsors of war is a step in the right direction, but the Hungarian government wants guarantees that the bank will not be added to the list in the future,” said Szijjártó.
He added that he invited representatives of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption of Ukraine to Budapest so that they could negotiate an agreement that would ensure that OTP Bank would not be added to this list in the future.
“If a promising agreement is reached there, of course, we have to think about what steps it will require on our part,” Szijjarto said.
According to him, NAPC also has a list submitted for sanctions, which still includes the Russian division of OTP Bank and four managers of Hungarian banks.
“We hope that these four leaders of the OTP and the Russian structure will not be included in the list of the Ukrainian anti-corruption agency,” the minister said.
Let’s remember that in May of this year, the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption included the Hungarian OTP Bank in the list of international war sponsors. The reason for this decision is that the management of this bank continues to operate in the Russian Federation and actually recognized the so-called “DPR” and “LPR”.
At the same time, the foreign ministers of Hungary and Germany argued about OTP Bank. Annalena Berbock drew attention to the illegal activities of financial institutions in the occupied territories, but Peter Szijjarto opposed her.
As reported, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said they are not satisfied with Ukraine’s decision to temporarily exclude OTP Bank from the list of war sponsors in order to unlock 500 million euros from the EU war fund.
