The Norwegian government will allocate about 7.5 billion kroner ($684 million) from the budget to military support for Ukraine.
The Norwegian government plans to increase the country’s defense budget by 15 billion kroner (about $1.7 billion). Part of the funds was promised to help Ukraine. This was announced by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stere, BNN Breaking reports.
According to him, Norway’s defense budget will increase by 20% compared to the current year.
The proposed budget of 90.8 billion kroner (about $10.2 billion) for 2024 will be distributed in three main areas: increasing the capacity of the defense forces, supporting Ukraine and further strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
A significant portion of the budget, about 7.5 billion crowns ($684 million), is proposed to be spent on military support for Ukraine.
Since the current government took office in 2021, the defense budget has increased by 40%. Norway’s national budget for 2024 will be presented on October 6.
Norway aims to increase its defense spending to at least 2% of its GDP by 2026, according to an ancient goal of NATO alliance members. According to the government, the country’s current defense spending will reach more than 1.4% of GDP.
We remind you that earlier the Norwegian authorities decided to provide an additional billion Norwegian kroner (over $92 million) for Ukrainian citizens who need important assistance.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Norway has provided Ukraine with more than NOK 3.5 billion ($323.9 million) in humanitarian support and aid to refugees in neighboring countries.
