Scientists have made significant breakthrough contributions to the Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines to combat the coronavirus and enable the effective use of mRNA for vaccines and immunotherapy.
Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman demonstrated in their work that modified mRNA is efficiently converted into proteins when administered to animals. This has allowed the use of new mRNA technology to be considered for therapeutic treatment.

The study also found that nucleoside modified mRNA can be used to vaccinate animals against various pathogens: influenza virus, HIV, malaria, SARS-CoV-2, etc.
The scientists’ research makes it possible to take the necessary measures to prevent infection, treat various acute and chronic diseases, as well as gene editing.
The Prize in Medicine and Physiology traditionally opens the Nobel week. On October 3, the names of the Nobel Prize laureates in physics will be announced, on October 4 – in chemistry, on October 5 – in literature, and on October 6 in Oslo the peace prize laureate will be named.
The winner of the Alfred Nobel Prize in Economics, established by the Swedish Bank of Sweden in 1968, will be announced on October 9.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022 was awarded to Svante Pääbo, who works in paleogenetics.
