The Turkish leader said the EU made his country “wait at its door for 40 years.”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the European Union for taking too long in his country’s European integration process. He said this on Sunday, October 1, in a speech at the opening of parliament, Deutsche Welle reports.
He said Turkey “expects nothing more from the European Union,” which has kept the country “waiting at its door for 40 years.”
“We fulfilled all the promises we made to the EU, but they fulfilled almost none of them,” complained the Turkish leader.
In conclusion, Erdogan added that he would not “allow any new demands or conditions” for his country’s accession to the European Union.
Let’s remember that in 2018, Turkey’s EU accession negotiations were suspended. Work to strengthen the customs union between Ankara and Brussels is also on hold. At the same time, Turkey’s status as a candidate for joining the European Union was not revoked because of the refugee deal.
However, in July 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was ready to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO, but asked the EU to clear the way for Ankara to join the European Community.
The Austrian Chancellor has called for the talks on Turkey’s EU accession to be closed
